8th June 2022: World Oceans Day | Goal 14: Life below Water

The Economic Times is happy to announce the upcoming initiative of the ET Leadership Dialogues under The ET Global Sustainability Congress which is scheduled virtually on 8th June 2022 to rejoice the occasion of the World Oceans Day.

India has a 2.02 million square kilometres exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and an 8,118-kilometer-long coastline with abundant and diverse marine living resources. The Indian government is supporting the 'Blue Growth Initiative,' which aims to improve the lives and livelihoods of fishermen and their families by utilizing wealth from the country's marine and other aquatic resources. SDG 14 asks for the conservation and sustainable use of the oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development. India must up its attempts to harness the Indian Ocean's oceanic riches. The employment of technology to exploit oceanic resources in the Indian Ocean is necessary. In this direction, schemes like the O-SMART scheme, which aims to govern the use of oceans and marine resources for sustainable development become paramount to be included in the roadmap for future development agendas. The chosen topic by ET for this year’s oceans day is “Innovations in Blue Economy: Growth Opportunities for India.”

ET intends to support the chosen agenda by the United Nations to protect at least 30% of our blue planet by 2030 and envisions to discuss actionable micro and macro solutions to increase human actions on the ocean and mobilize and unite the India’s population on sustainable management of the India’s oceans and other resources of water.

Key agendas to be discussed in the proposed initiative include the following-:

  • Government’s role in ensuring utility of ocean resources for boosting the economic growth
  • Sustainable water solutions for employment generation
  • Importance of innovation to build resilience against climate change
  • Development of water resources for food and energy security
  • More blue initiatives for better connectivity

Natural resources are the greatest global wealth that are essential for sustaining life and the environment. Their importance in preserving the ecosystem's structure and functioning, as well as the services they provide, cannot be overstated. The chosen topic by ET for this year’s environment day is “Reducing Stress on Natural Resources: Sustainable Solutions for Management of Natural Resources.”

ET intends to support the chosen theme by the United Nations Environment Program “Only One Earth" with the focus on “Living Sustainably in Harmony with Nature” and envisions to discuss actionable micro and macro solutions to ensure a sustainable natural resource management in India.

Key agendas to be discussed in the proposed initiative include the following-:

  • Government’s role in ensuring a rights-based approach to natural resources
  • Synergy between net-zero initiatives and natural resources management
